With the unfulfilled demand and often high costs for mental health services, brief therapy is an obvious practical solution. However, with most clients going to therapy once, averaging 5-8 sessions of treatment, and 90% stopping before 20 sessions, brief therapy is actually what most clients are doing despite our attempts to fit them into our longer-term models. However, apart from these logistical issues, research has shown that brief therapy works; it can be as effective in addressing a wide range of problems as traditional therapies.

In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll take a brisk walk through the world of brief therapy. We’ll look at the most common formats and models, discuss who it is and is not best for, and discuss a variety of skills and techniques—from use of homework, roleplaying, educational material to family sessions, emotional freedom techniques, uncovering emotional wounds—for individuals, couples, families. Finally, we’ll describe common treatment maps for common presenting problems and the running of those important opening sessions.

If you’ve ever been curious about brief therapy, are interested in integrating it into your current practice, or want to explore new skills, you’ll leave this workshop feeling energized and creative.

Workshop Objectives:

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the common characteristics of various forms of brief therapy.
  2. Define who and who not brief therapy is effective for.
  3. Describe 4 techniques used in brief therapy.
  4. Discuss treatment maps for anxiety, anger, and couple conflict.
  5. Describe the goals of initial sessions with clients.
