PRESENTER:  Eryca Kasse, LICSW

Category 1 | 2.0 CEUs

DESCRIPTION:

Appropriate for all clinical levels. Target audience: clinicians working with adult clients living with substance use disorders and histories of trauma. The 12 steps of AA and NA are the most widespread and available peer support groups for substance use disorder recovery, though some language of the 12 steps may be contraindicated for clients in need of a more trauma informed approach. This training will analyze language of the 12 steps through a trauma-informed lens. Provide clients with alternative language options to promote healing & prevent re-traumatization and explore alternative peer support groups.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand a broadened definition of substance use recovery beyond abstinence only.
  2. Analyze the 12 steps through a trauma informed lens.
  3. Identify 10 peer support alternatives to AA/NA including secular/non-spiritual, womens', feminist/social justice, harm reduction/moderation, & yoga/meditation/holistic.
  4. Refer clients to appropriate peer supports utilizing a client empowerment perspective.
