As research evidence mounts for the benefits of practicing mind-body skills like mindfulness meditation, guided imagery, and breathwork, effective psychotherapists are adding these tools to their clinical toolboxes and their personal lives. These relatively simple techniques can mitigate sympathetic nervous system hyperarousal, reduce pain, boost immune system functioning, increase gray matter in the brain, provide protection against relapsing depression and even influence which of your already existing genetic traits will be expressed in your body. These techniques that quite naturally increase self-awareness can also be the path to increasing self-compassion and self-care. In this introduction to mind-body skills, we will review a bit of latest research and have the experience of practicing techniques that you can immediately begin to incorporate into your work.

Learning Objectives

Participants Will:
  • Be able to list 3 benefits of mind-body skills practices as evidenced by research studies
  • Learn one breathwork practice that they can use in their practices
  • Learn one mindfulness meditation activity that they can use in their practices
  • Learn one guided imagery that can use in their practices
