Resources and Requirements for licensure renewal

Association of Social Work Boards

ASWB provides support and services to the social work regulatory community to advance safe, competent, and ethical practices to strengthen public protection.

ASWB’s vision is that all social workers are licensed in order to protect clients and client systems.

DC Health Board: Social Work Licensing

The Board of Social Work regulates the practice of social work in DC, including specialties within the profession. The Board also administers and enforces the law. The Board evaluates applications and administers exams, recommends standards and procedures, and issues licenses. The Board receives and reviews complaints; requests investigations; conducts hearings, issues subpoenas, examines witnesses, and administers oaths; and issues an annual report.

All social work Licenses expire on July 31 of odd years. At the time of license renewal all licensees are required to have completed the 40 hours of approved continuing education units including the 6 hours of Ethics (must be done face to face; no online courses are accepted) and 2 hours of LGBTQ training (this can be an online course) and 4 of the total required continuing education shall be in Public Health Priorities. Only 12 hours out of the total 40 hours required can be online. HIV CEU is no longer a requirement. Please review the Board's COVID-19 policy statements for information about supervision and continuing education.

MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH MD Board of Social Work Examiners

The current continuing education requirement is 40 (30 for LBSW) credit units of continuing education in programs and categories approved by the Board for each two-year period of licensure. Licensees must obtain at least 20 (15 for LBSW) of the 40 (30 for LBSW) credits in Category I . All 40 (30 for LBSW) credit units may be earned in Category I. Category I credits can only be given by Board Authorized Sponsors , Association of Social Work Boards (www.aswb.org) and the National Association of Social Workers (www.socialworkers.org).

Of the 40 (30 for LBSW) required credit units, a licensee must obtain 3 credit units in Category I or Category II in a content area focusing on ethics and professional conduct which is consistent with generally accepted standards of practice.
